A LETTER TO MY VET PEOPLE.
Ah, the life of a veterinary professional! Who knew that alongside saving lives and soothing anxious pet owners, you’d also have to battle the chaos of your own health and well-being? You’re a vet and frankly, you’re overworked and sleep-deprived spending more time elbow-deep in fur and blood than you do taking care of yourself. Or perhaps you’re a veterinary nurse or technician—running on caffeine and adrenaline, juggling patients, paperwork, and that endless conveyor belt of demanding pet owners. Your days are a whirlwind of surgeries, consultations, and paperwork, leaving you with just enough energy to fall into bed at night, not run a marathon or whip up a kale smoothie. Disruption? Competition? Oh, let me tell you about those.
Disruption
Let’s start with disruption, shall we? I’m not talking about the delightful disruption when a puppy decides your leg is the perfect chew toy. No, I’m talking about how your life gets turned upside down every time you try to focus on your health. You’ve tried gym memberships, meal plans, even that app everyone swore would change your life. But no matter how many times you dive in with enthusiasm, something always comes up—an emergency surgery, an unexpected call-out, or just the sheer exhaustion from a 14-hour day.
And don’t get me started on the mental toll. The constant stress of work, coupled with the guilt of not taking care of yourself, leaves you feeling like you’re stuck in a hamster wheel—running fast but getting nowhere. The fear of failing again if you try something new is real. It's like trying to repair a broken bone with a plaster—utterly useless and a bit insulting.
Competition
Then there's the competition. Not with others, mind you—oh no, it’s the competition within yourself. On one hand, you want to be healthier, fitter, and more energetic. You want to be that person who can handle anything thrown at them, while still having a life outside of work. But on the other hand, there’s the part of you that’s just so, so tired. It’s like there’s a war going on inside your head. Do you spend that precious hour of free time exercising, or do you collapse on the sofa with a glass of wine and the latest crime drama? Spoiler alert: the sofa wins 9 out of 10 times.
And when you see others vet who seem to have it all together—fit, glowing with health, smiling as if they’ve just come from a yoga retreat instead of an emergency spay—it’s hard not to feel like you’re falling behind. The pressure is immense, but the motivation is fleeting.
Dream Outcomes
Now, let’s talk about dream outcomes. Imagine this: You wake up each morning, full of energy, ready to take on the day. Your body feels strong, lean, and capable. You walk into work with confidence, knowing you can handle whatever comes your way because you’ve taken the time to care for yourself. You’re not just surviving—You are thriving. You’ve built habits that stick, and you’re part of a community that understands the unique challenges you face as a veterinary professional. You’ve got support, guidance, and a plan that works for you, not against you..
